Step 1: Cleaning

The Preparer & Deglazer is made for thoroughly cleaning smooth leather. Removing dirt, dust, mud, and grease, for example, ensures that the paint adheres well to the surface and does not crack or chip over time. Do not underestimate this process - investing time into preparing the leather ensures long-lasting results!

In addition to cleaning the surface of the leather, the Preparer & Deglazer removes old paint layers and other non-permeated layers.

Important to note: this product is suited only for use on leather, and not any other materials such as plastic or rubber. When preparing to use the Preparer & Deglazer, make sure to clean parts of the item that are not made of leather (e.g. the sides and edges of rubber soles) with water and soap only. While the principal ingredient of the Preparer & Deglazer is acetone, the various other components of the product make it suited for use on leather.

While we do not directly advise against the use of pure acetone on leather to clean it, we do strongly recommend exercising utmost care in that situation. Acetone is a corrosive substance and can not only quickly cause damage to the surface of the leather, but should also be handled with care before and after use.

If dealing with very smooth leather, such as patent leather, going the extra mile to prepare it is highly recommended. The paint adheres better if the surface of the leather is first roughened by lightly sanding it with extremely fine sandpaper.

Step 2: Paints

Before use, mix the paint thoroughly. In addition to shaking the bottle, we recommend mixing it when first opened. Apply the paint onto the leather in thin coats, letting each one dry in between. This will ensure a long-lasting result.

Before painting, we recommend first trying out the colour in an inconspicuous place, to make sure that it has the desired shade of colour.

Angelus Leather Paint is made to be elastic. However, if the coats are applied thickly, this elasticity becomes less effective. Therefore, applying the coat in thin and even layers ensures that the coat retains its elastic components, and will last as intended. Please ensure that each coat is given enough time to air dry. Using a hair dryer will result in the opposite effect. After drying properly, the basic paints will give a smooth gloss finish. The neon paints in turn have a more matt finish.

At the request of various Angelus users, Angelus Leather Products developed the Duller. This product can be mixed with leather paint in order to obtain a matt finish. The rule of thumb is to add between 1.5 and 4.5 ml of Duller to every 100 ml of leather paint. Before mixing it into the main paint, make sure to test it out on a smaller scale first.

Step 3: Protection and finishers

Are you satisfied with the end result, and have left the product to dry for 24 hours? You can now add various finishers to seal the results in the best way possible. The Acrylic Finisher keeps the leather looking good for longer, adding an extra water-repellent layer. The leather paint, while already providing protection, is thus doubly secured against accidents and the elements, such as wind and rain.

Using a finisher is especially advised if you have only (re-)applied paint to a part of the leather item and not the whole. Using a finisher will ensure an even appearance.

The Acrylic Finisher is available in four types: matt, satin, gloss and high gloss. If you have mixed the Duller with your paint, make sure to also use a matt finisher. Satin, gloss and high gloss always give a shinier final result. To achieve optimal results, apply the finisher two to four times.
